A voir en entrée libre du 2 juillet au 27 mars 2022

Io Burgard

Intervention on the building.

As the third artist invited to take over the entrance to the institution after Mimosa Échard and Olafur Eliasson, Io Burgard has created a new piece for the MO.CO. Hotel des collections.

Io Burgard's work celebrates the fluidity and mobility of bodies in transit points. She often refers to ancient statues in her smooth-lined drawings, paintings and sculptures.

Io Burgard took up the invitation of the MO.CO. Hôtel des collections to produce an original piece of work while reinvesting one of her favourite motifs, that of the door. As a transit point from an open space into a covered space, from the outside to the inside, the door can be crossed to enter or to leave, to move from one place to another. Janus, the Roman god of doors, has two faces: he presides over the two dimensions of time, the past and the future, and also over the two spaces that the door controls. A sign of attention, the artist watches over this figure of limits. Her proposal will include no door to be pushed ajar, forward or aside, no mobile element within a fixed setting, but an opening to be stepped over and walked past.

Biography

Born in Talence in 1987

Lives and works in Paris and Saint-Denis.

Represented by the Maïa Muller gallery (http://www.maiamuller.com/io-burgard)

Io Burgard travels with ease from reality to fantasy, and vice versa, thanks to the multiple media she uses, from drawing to sculpture, from frescoes to bas-relief. Her fluid, round and plaster-moulded shapes, are possible translations or continuations in relief of hand-drawn lines.

Their white colour sometimes appears to designate the void filled with mental images, and sometimes represents porous forms. These elastic, melting, both mineral and organic, both figurative and abstract shapes create a circuit and delineate a space pierced by numerous openings.

Io Burgard is an artist based in Paris and Saint Denis, whose work explores the fluidity of bodies as well as their mobility within transit points. She graduated from the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts (National Institute of Fine Arts) in Paris in 2014 and from the École des Arts Décoratifs (Institute of Decorative Arts) in Strasbourg in 2012. She has been awarded residencies at the Fondation d'entreprise Hermès, at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, and at Saint-Ange this year. She has had solo exhibitions at the Centre d'art contemporain Les Capucins, in Embrun, in 2020, at the Maïa Muller gallery in Paris in 2019, and at the Regional Contemporary Art Museuù Occitanie/Pyrénées-Méditerranée in 2018. She has participated in group exhibitions both nationally and internationally, at Galleria Continua in Les Moulins, the Palais de Tokyo in Paris and Ginza Maison Hermès in Tokyo.
